In Mainland China, school is free until ninth grade. After that, some low-income families struggle to pay for the education needs of their children.

Education-related expenses go far beyond tuition. They include books, uniforms, transportation or boarding that also need to be paid. As a result of the compounded costs, some students do not complete their studies.

Being unable to complete their studies leaves these young people with limited opportunities. But Shanghai Sunrise has changed that for thousands of the city’s socio-economic disadvantaged youth, with its scholarship support helping many graduates go on to have better career opportunities and open up new doors in life.

This year, the Goodman Foundation increased its sponsorship from 20 to 30 disadvantaged students, making it one of the charity’s larger contributors. Our Shanghai team is embracing the program by hosting webinars, holding career days and mentoring students. These connections help students to understand real-life job opportunities and feel more prepared for aspects of entering the workforce that would otherwise be intimidating.
